Mon State’s chief minister and others—most members of the National League for Democracy (NLD)—have announced that they will run for re-election in the general elections scheduled to be held later this year.

There are total of 12 ministers in the Mon State government including the chief minister. Ten are from the NLD, one from the Mon United Party, and one military-appointed minister for border affairs and security.

Nine out of 10 NLD ministers have submitted their applications stating their intent to run again. Missing is Tun Htay, the minister of agriculture and transportation.

“Ko Tun Htay won’t run again in the coming election but the other ministers will run again. They already submitted their applications. The party’s state electoral candidate selection committee will check their applications,” Dr. Khin Saung, chair of the NLD party in Mon State, told NMG.

They will reportedly run in the same constituencies where they were elected in 2015.

Mon State parliament speaker Tin Ei, who is also a member of the NLD, has said that she will not run for re-election.

“I will be 75 years of age soon,” she explained. “I want to open the path for the younger generation. They are young and energetic. They are active. They have capacity. They want to learn. That’s why I want to give the opportunity to them.”

Dr. Min Kyi Win, an MUP party member who is serving as the natural resource and environment minister, said that he will wait for his party to advise him on whether he should run again.

According to the Mon State Election Commission, there are nearly 1,740,000 eligible voters in Mon State, excluding Burma Army soldiers and their families, which typically make up significant voting blocs.

More than 100,000 of these voters are first-time voters, who have turned 18 years old since the last election.
