Dawei Man Killed During Interrogation

The family of Ko Kyaw Thura, who died after being tortured by Burma’s military in the Taninthari Region, wants the body of the 30-year-old returned. A relative of the victim, who spoke to NMG on condition of anonymity, said soldiers tortured him in an interrogation room in Dawei town.
Ko Kyaw Thura was arrested at his home in Dawng Ngu Tan Ngar Ward after he returned from work on 15 May. According to residents, soldiers took him back to the ward the next evening, forcing him to lead them to several houses where they arrested five men and three women. The women were reportedly arrested in place of their husbands, who were not at home at the time.
Two men and one woman were later released.
Another relative of Ko Kyaw Thura, who also requested anonymity, explained that they are Muslim and wanted to bury him according to their religious beliefs.
Before his tragic death, Ko Kyaw Thura worked in a grocery shop and as an electrician and was involved in voluntary work in the town.
