A Military Council drone injured three children when it bombed a civilian village in eastern Hpruso Township of Karenni State where no fighting was reported on Wednesday.
“They deliberately targeted our village with a drone. They often attack civilian villages in our area when there are no clashes,” a local man said, not wanting to reveal his name for fear of reprisals.
During its war against resistance forces, the regime’s forces have frequently bombed civilians, but this year it has stepped up air attacks on villages in Burma’s smallest state.
According to information obtained from the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF), which is fighting the Military Council in Karenni State and Pekon in southern Shan State, one of the victims is in critical condition. The junta sent the drone that injured the three children aged 8, 9, and 10 from its No.14 Military Training School.
A woman helping the displaced civilians also requesting anonymity said, “It’s not the first drone attack on a civilian village in Karenni State. The Burma army has been launching attacks since early 2023, and it is terrorising the population. People are very worried about their safety.”
The regime has also been using jet fighters, airships, and artillery and mortar shells to target civilians in peaceful areas of the township and other areas of Karenni and southern Shan states, which KNDF pointed out is a war crime.
The civilian group, the Progressive Karenni People’s Force, reported that 375 civilians were killed by the Burma army in Karenni state between February 1, 2021, and July 31, 2023, and the regime launched 572 airstrikes.
