At least 15 people, including several children, lost their lives in a horrific bombing by a State Administration Council (SAC) jet fighter on a church in Kanan village near the town of Khampat in Sagaing Region on Sunday morning.
The attack at 10:40 am wounded over 30 people, now in critical condition in the Tamu District area, according to information from local sources and members of the People’s Defence Force, who are actively opposing the military regime.
A local source, requesting anonymity, described the attack as a deliberate strike on a church. “The bomb struck the church, and up to 10 homes nearby were destroyed,” he said, adding that they have confirmed 15 casualties but fear the number could rise.
Another local woman, also requesting anonymity, reported that SAC dropped four bombs starting at 10 am, also destroying a school not far from the church. “There were no resistance fighters in the school. There were (only) innocent children there,” she said, highlighting that the attack occurred on Sunday, a day of worship for the Christian Chin people. “The military council has committed mass killings. This is a serious human rights abuse.”
According to various sources, there was no fighting reported in the area when the airstrike occurred.
The resistance groups captured Khampat town on November 7 from SAC and have been busy installing their own people-led administration.
