Soldiers from the regime’s armed forces have allegedly slaughtered 8 civilians, including a woman who was raped before being killed, during a clearance campaign in a village in Gangaw Township in Burma’s Magwe Region.

According to local reports, about 150 Burma Army (BA) soldiers came to Yay Shin on Monday morning, 4 July, at a time when no fighting was happening.

“They also burned some houses in the village. Many people fled to the jungle to escape them,” said a man requesting anonymity. He said that one of the victims was Khin Maung Htay. The next day the soldiers travelled to Chaung Gwa but he didn’t know why.

Another anonymous source said the soldiers fired their guns in the air when they came to Yay Shin. At noontime, they murdered three of the men and the woman.

“Their bodies are still in the village but because we’re hiding in jungle we can’t collect them,” she explained.

The female victim’s baby is believed to be still in Yay Shin.

Other villagers who escaped are sheltering in a Buddhist monastery.

The soldiers detained 21 people from the village to use as human shields when they travelled to Chaung Gwa. At least two children still missing may have also been among those that the BA abducted.

“They launched a clearance campaign even though there is no clashes in the area,” says the woman.

The same column travelled to Kyauk Chap, Shwe Bo, Nam Hkar, Kon Ywa, Myin Thar, Ye Hla, Thasi and Mwe Lae in the township, causing many villagers to flee to the jungle.
