Rescue workers have been dispatched to help residents as at least four townships in Mon State have been affected by floods caused by heavy rains that have submerged homes.
“Some houses are already completely flooded and residents have been rescued and taken to a safe place,” said a volunteer.
Heavy rains that began on 16 August are still causing flooding in Zayya Myine, Thiri Myine, Hlaing, Thayar Aye and Shwe Pyi Aye wards of Mawlamyine town, including Zayyar Thiri, which is in the town centre.
Mawlamyine, Mudon, Thanphyuzayap, Kyaukmayaw and Paung townships are all at risk. In Kyeikmayaw, the villages of Kawt Dun, Ulay and Kawt Manaw were flooded. Kamarwet in Mondon Township, Zinkyeik village in Paung Township and some districts in downtown Thanphyuzayap have been affected.
Local officials and volunteers from Paung and Mudon are helping motorists travelling sections of the roads from Yangon to Mawlamyine and Mawlamyine to Thanphyuzayap. Some parts of the roads will be closed soon if the rain continues and poses a danger to motorists.
“Although these roads are flooded, cars, trucks and motorbikes can still travel on these roads, but it is still raining so the water level will continue to rise, increasing the danger to travellers,” a traveller who requested anonymity told NMG.
