An armed group fighting Burma’s military regime shelled a police station in Sagaing Region during a retaliatory attack after drunken soldiers staying there attacked a home in the village, killing a pregnant woman and injuring four other family members, including a year-old baby.

The Nagar Ni Guerrilla Force (Mattara) attacked the police station in Shein Makar with light and heavy weapons on Friday evening, 11 November. The attack came a few days after the Burma Army (BA) fired an artillery shell at the victim’s home in the village in Wetlet Township.

“A pregnant woman was killed, a child, an elderly woman and a man were wounded by the BA shelling, so we attacked the police station with an 80 mm mortar as revenge for those civilians,” a Nagar Ni Guerrilla Force officer has told NMG.

After the attack, BA deployed about 50 soldiers to the area and fired artillery shells in all directions from the station, causing minor injuries to some resistance fighters, the source said. However, he couldn’t say whether BA soldiers or policemen were injured when his group fired at the police station.

The baby and a man were seriously injured when the BA shelled their house, where no fighting had been reported earlier. Both are receiving treatment at the Sagaing Hospital.
