A Demawso man was killed after stepping on a hidden landmine outside his home in Karenni State where regime forces have been battling resistance groups following last year’s coup.

According to a volunteer with a civilian aid group, the man suffered serious injuries from the hidden explosive device at around 8am on 16 November and died the next day in hospital in the state capital Loikaw. “He was in critical condition and unconscious when we took him to hospital,” the man said, explaining that one of his eyes and his leg were destroyed in the blast.

According to locals, the victim is 39-year-old Peh Bu from Dor Niku in Demawso Township.

A volunteer from another group said the Loikaw Public Hospital called them to collect his body, which they then buried. “His face was disfigured and his body had turned black,” the man told NMG.

Since last year’s coup, at least 4 people have been killed by landmines and at least 30 people have been injured by Burma Army (BA) shelling between 1and 16 November in Karenni State, causing many to flee to neighbouring southern Shan State, volunteer groups report.
