Plainclothes soldiers, traffic police and members of the People’s Militia Force, under the regime, have been circulating propaganda flyers requesting resistance fighters to surrender in the town of Myeik in Taninthari Region.
The propaganda flyers titled ‘Invitation to Return Home’ tells members of the People’s Defence Forces (PDFs) to give up the fight to against the Military Council and return home from the jungle.
The flyers say that the exiled National Unity Government and Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw are terrifying the public by committing “killings and acts of violence against the people”. It promised, “If the PDF soldiers return to legality along with their weapons, they will be rewarded with some money”.
A 35-year-old from Myeik told NMG on condition of anonymity, “They are distributing these propaganda flyers in the town instead of to the PDFs in the jungle because they know can’t defeat them with force…This just shows that they aren’t strong enough.”
U Thaung Aye, Township Administration Council member for Myeik Township and U Soe Thein Min, deputy General Administration Development officer, were spotted with other staffs from the municipal department passing around the leaflets with the regime’s forces from 23 to 26 June. Flyers were dropped at the Toeche, Myothit, Seik Nge markets, along the riverside, at the Myit Nge and Phayakai intersections, in front of the statue of General Aung San and at taxi stands.
PDF troops have attacked some of the Burma army’s camps in Palaw Township about 50 miles north of Myeik. The resistance groups also have a strong presence south of the town and on the road to Kawthaung. Additionally, PDF fighters have launched an operation against the military in Kyunsu Township, located west of Myeik Township.
