The Military Council torched and shelled homes in western Yebyu (also Yayphyu) Township in Dawei District in southern Burma on Sunday, 24 September.

Locals said soldiers arrested people and burnt some homes in the upper part of Kha Maung Chaung at noontime. Indiscriminate shelling around the village followed shortly after. A few hours later, they burnt some more dwellings between Kha Maung Chaung and Akani.

According to an anonymous local source, about 70 Burma army soldiers have been patrolling the area in Tanintharyi Region since 21 September.

The regime’s column was present at the Dawei Deep-sea Port project road and the Kin Bridge before reaching the villages in western Yebyu Township. The elderly people, women, children, and other residents of Wet Chaung, Kha Maung Chaung, Akani, Wazum Taw, and Ya Nge fled before the column arrived in the area.

“The Burma army arrested some villagers, including women, and their families are worried about them,” a 40-year-old man from Kha Maung Chaung said on condition of anonymity. Although some people have been freed, ten Kha Maung Chaung villagers remain in custody. Locals say the column is still present in the area.

In August, the army shot at civilians and burned 14 homes in Akani and 2 in Wazum Taw.
