A junta airbase in Myitkyina was reportedly attacked by a resistance group in Kachin State, resulting in at least two jet fighters being damaged during the attack on Sunday, 24 September, as claimed by the group.
An officer from the Northern Brothers People’s Defense Force (NBPDF) stated that two F7 planes were damaged after the group fired four rockets at the airbase near Maw Hpoung around 7:30 am on 24 September. He expected casualties. “Only two rockets struck the airbase, and another rocket landed near Maw Hpoung,” the officer said.
According to NBPDF’s statement, a communications tower was knocked out, a workshop was damaged, and soldiers’ lodging was affected. Following the attack, communications between soldiers at the airbase and those in the town of Myitkyina were disrupted.
The resistance fighters fired two 90 mm and two 107 mm rockets, marking the second time NBPDF had attacked the base, and all the fighters successfully retreated from the area without any issues.
A local anonymous source said the regime has clamped down since the attack and is checking everyone carefully at its checkpoints. “We heard the explosions this morning. I thought it was just a training exercise. Later, I learned the airbase was attacked.”
