News that the National League for Democracy (NLD) will take action against Mon State chief minister Dr. Aye Zan is untrue, according to a party spokesperson.

The Irrawaddy reported on its Burmese language site on Wednesday that the NLD had given a warning to the chief minister due to letters of complaint received about his performance. The NLD’s Dr. Myo Nyunt said that this is false, a response echoed by Dr. Aye Zan in a press conference on the same day, calling it “incorrect news.”

“I asked Dr. Myo Nyunt about it. He laughed at my question and replied, ‘I didn’t say anything about you,’” the chief minister said. “If a complaint letter is sent to our party, our party will at least ask me about it. Currently, there is no question from our party.”

He added that there is no conflict between NLD party members in Mon State.

NLD spokesperson Dr. Myo Nyunt said that he did not speak to The Irrawaddy about the issue.

“We don’t have any investigation into the Mon chief minister. We don’t have any ongoing process to warn the Mon chief minister,” he explained.

The Irrawaddy’s Burmese edition published an explanation on its Facebook page regarding the controversy, stating that they had received information about the alleged warnings from other parliamentarians in Naypyidaw and had confirmed it with Dr. Myo Nyunt.

The Irrawaddy said that they then contacted Dr. Aye Zan about the warning, who reportedly said that he would make an inquiry with the people responsible.

Following Wednesday’s press conference in Mawlamyine, The Irrawaddy re-interviewed Dr. Myo Nyunt, who explained that when he spoke to The Irrawaddy he had confused the name with that of another chief minister and that there was no outstanding issue with Dr. Aye Zan. The mistake was attributed to a misunderstanding

Dr. Myo Nyunt said he may speak to the Myanmar Media Council and look further into the issue.
