The first ethnic Lisu youth conference is taking place in Kachin State’s Myitkyina this week.

Held in Pammati Ward, the event is being held from December 12-14 to encourage members of the Lisu community to work together in politics, economics, as well as on education and social issues.

“The main objective is for Lisu youth living in different townships and regions to work together and have unity among themselves,” said Lae Mae Tar, the conference organizing committee chairperson. “Another thing is for our Lisu youth to work together on matters concerning youth development.”

The youth conference will feature a three-part discussion, beginning with foreign and local speakers providing insights on the sectors mentioned above. The second part of the discussion will involve youth participants drafting a future plan for youth development. Finally, an implementation and working committee will be formed.

“I hope we will have a committee. We will form a Lisu literature and culture committee. After that, we are working to form the Myanmar Lisu Youth Network. Through the network, we will work together for the development of Lisu youth including in business and education matters. That’s our goal,” Lae Mae Tar told NMG.

Lisu living in neighboring countries have been invited to participate in the conference in Myitkyina in an attempt to build a transnational Lisu network.

According to conference organizing committee, more than 2,000 Lisu youth from Kachin, Shan and Karenni states as well as Mandalay and Yangon regions and China and Thailand are expected to participate in the event.
