Many civilians in Karen State who’ve been forced from their homes because of the conflict are sick with the flu or malaria, but there’s not enough medicine for them.

A man from the Karen Social Affairs Organisation who works in Nyaung Lay Pin District said they’re regularly bitten by mosquitoes in the jungle. But it’s very difficult to get the medicine to the area, which is in Karen National Union’s Brigade 3.

“Buses, for example, are afraid to transport medicine from Yangon to Nyaung Lay Pin because there are many checkpoints along the way. The police and soldiers don’t allow anyone to transport much.” Even the shops in Nyaung Lay Pin only sell a little at a time, he says. Moreover, no one gets enough to eat, which makes the health crisis even worse.

He hopes that international donors can provide some assistance to the displaced villagers who’ve taken refuge in the district. Since last year’s coup, many innocent civilians displaced by the fighting across Karen State have needed emergency assistance.
