The Mandalay People’s Defence Force (PDF) has already clashed eight times this month with the Burma Army (BA), where an offensive against the group in Mandalay Region and northern Shan State has also displaced many civilians from the area.
An officer with the PDF, which is fighting the country’s dictatorship, blamed the regime for the increase in fighting in the area after it sent over 200 regime soldiers to attack the group along the road from ruby-rich Mogok to Mandalay. He said the group clashed with regime forces twice on 8 November, five times on 9 November and once on 16 November.
Five soldiers from BA were killed and five wounded, the officer said, when they attacked soldiers from Light Infantry Battalions 501, 502 and 505 with landmines on 16 November. A three-hour battle ensued during which the two groups fired at each other with light and heavy weapons. Four resistance fighters were wounded by 60mm and 120mm mortars that day.
Six BA were reportedly killed after stepping on six landmines planted by the PDF on the morning of 14 November.
On 9 November, 20 BA soldiers were reportedly killed on the battlefield and PDF fighter Zaw Win Aung, also known as Hman Lay, was also killed and several resistance fighters were wounded.
