The military arrested 112 Rohingya after their boat capsized and they were forced to swim to shore in the Ayawaddy Region.

“After locals spotted them on the beach, they alerted the army, who arrested them,” a local government official told NMG on condition of anonymity.

The boat with 57 men, 43 women and 12 children on board sank near Kadon Lay Island in Bogalay Township at around 2am on 20 December.

Another man close to the police, who also wished to remain anonymous, said they were from Rakhine State and had nowhere to run making it easy to capture them. The boat’s driver remains at large.

“These Rohingya were born in Rakhine state where there are no job opportunities for them. They had to leave to find work elsewhere,” an anonymous member of the Ayawaddy Myanmar – Muslim Network has told NMG.

According to locals, they’re being detained at Bogalay Myoma police station while investigations are ongoing.

Between April and September, about 600 people were arrested by the regime’s armed forces, of whom more than 150 were sentenced to two-year prison terms for immigration violations.

A former immigration official, who also requested anonymity, said the Rohingya from Rakhine State enter Ayawaddy Region through Kyan Khin, Lay Myetner, Yay Kyi, Nga Thaing Chaung, Tha Poung, Pathein, Shwe Thaung Yan, Chaung Tha, Ngwe Hsoung and Nga Yok Kaung areas. They will then travel to the towns of Ma-U Pin, Myaung Mya, Bogalay, Laputta, Wahkhema, Kyeik Latt and Hinthada.
