The military regime unleashed bombs on Theindaw, forcing villagers to flee for their lives in Tanintharyi Township, after a local People’s Defence Force (PDF) fired shells and used drones to attack its camp in the village last week.

“I think the bombing has definitely damaged the villages in the area,” an officer from the Myeik PDF Battalion 2 told NMG. As villagers have already fled, he said he wasn’t aware of civilian casualties, but mentioned that fighting was ongoing at the time of this report.

After his troops attacked the regime’s camp in southern Burma for an hour on the morning of April 23, they retaliated by using several aircraft to drop almost 30 bombs on the village.

According to a male villager (source 2), who didn’t want to reveal his name, explained that a Mi-2 helicopter dropped at least 20 shells. Later, a jet fighter dropped 8 large shells and strafed the village with a machine gun.

The day before, another Mi-2 helicopter bombed Tha Htay, Ban Pyae, and Theindaw twice when no fighting was reported, dropping at least 25 shells. A woman was injured in the attacks that destroyed many houses.

Some of the civilians have fled to the jungle, while others are hiding in their farms. There’s no internet or phone services available in the area.

The regime has increased its use of airstrikes against civilians after losing many bases and towns to resistance groups across the country.
