Army soldiers in Myitkyina arrested five people after allegedly discovering politically sensitive correspondence on their mobile phones in the capital town, where the military and police have ramped up security measures following massive gains by resistance forces in Kachin State in recent months.
A man who knows the people who have been detained from Takkon Ward on Saturday said regime armed forces are patrolling the streets, checking the wallets and phones of everyone they stop. Family members of the detainees don’t know where their loved ones have been taken nor had any communication with them since their arrests.
Another source from Shatapru Ward told NMG that the armed forces are also checking people’s cars and motorcycles. “I do not know why soldiers are frisking people on the road.”
A young woman said everyone is afraid to leave their homes. “Even delivery men don’t want to send parcels to customers living on the outskirts of town.”
The Kachin Independence Army and allied forces have seized some of the Burma army camps near Waingmaw town near Myitkyina after attacking its positions on May 18. A regime counter-offensive with airstrikes and artillery attacks has caused civilian casualties and destroyed homes in Waingmaw Township.
