A number of Burma Army (BA) soldiers were killed and one Karenni Democratic Front (KDF) died when a coalition of resistance groups almost captured a regime camp in Demawso Township, but ultimately was thwarted after the BA shelled them, forcing them to retreat.
According to the Karenni Revolutionary Union (KRU), to which the KDF belongs, 15 BA were killed and Khoon Soe Pai (aka Khoon Pay), a resistance fighter, was killed by shrapnel in Kon Tha village in Karenni State. “They fired many shells at us,” said an KRU officer, explaining that they tried to save the 18-year-old but he died the next morning in a clinic.
Three columns of KRU (including the KDF) and the Demawso People’s Defence Force attacked the junta camp with 60 soldiers on 26 September. An officer from KRU told the NMG that they were only 80 feet from the BA soldiers when the junta troops bombarded them with M79 grenade launchers and 60mm and 120mm mortars from Loikaw, Ngwe Tawng and Dor Ngan Hkar.
The next day, the resistance groups attacked BA soldiers fleeing Kon Tha, but were forced to withdraw again after the regime shelled them from afar. KRU vowed to continue attacking the regime in the area.
Other armed groups belonging to KRU include the Fight For Justice, the Generation Z-21 PDF and the Demawso Medic Unit.
