Three Village Headmen Shot Dead in Northern Shan State

Three village headmen were shot and killed in Kyaukme Township, northern Shan State, by an unknown armed group on Sunday afternoon, according to local sources.
The shootings occurred at around 1:30 p.m. in the Nam Khong restaurant in Mong Ting village tract, located in Kyaukme town’s Ward 8.
“Two people were killed on the spot. Another person died in the hospital,” Tin Maung Thein, the chairperson of the Zewita Social Volunteer Team, told NMG.
The three headmen were Sai Tun Yin of Mong Ting village, and the headmen of Near Moon and Loi Oui, both of which are also in Mong Ting village tract Their names were not available at the time of reporting.
Tin Maung Thein said that he didn’t know who was responsible for the killings.
“I live in Kyaukme town. I feel so upset for these deceased village headmen, even though I cannot do anything for them,” a local youth told NMG, adding that they felt the town was “not safe for local people.”
The individual added that they hoped the authorities would carry out a thorough investigation and arrest the perpetrators.
“This kind of incident occurred last year, but the case went completely silent. Why could they not discover the truth?” the youth said.
The reference was to U Kalayana Wonsa, the abbot of Dhamma Maydani Shwe Kyin monastery, who was shot dead by two gunmen on October 5, 2018.
Two unknown gunmen also shot and killed the abbot of Khur Ning monastery on October 20 this year.
On Saturday, a cattle truck headed toward China on the national highway was shot at by unknown gunmen in Kyaukme District. The driver was killed and two workers were injured.
