The southern division of the Mon State Defence Force (MSDF) raided a police station in Ye Township on Thursday 1 September and successfully retreated without any casualties in this first attack by the armed group fighting the military regime.

“We heard that the police suffered casualties during the attack,” said an MSDF official, who is still awaiting the exact details of the operation, which the armed group calls Sin Phyu (White Elephant).

A local, who requested anonymity, said that soldiers and police stopped everyone at checkpoints in the hope of finding out who was responsible for the 6am attack in Khaw Jae, where most residents are Mon.

The Burma Army Infantry Battalion 31 base is located in the town. According to the MSDF, both the soldiers and the police make money by selling methamphetamine pills to traffickers in southern Mon State.

The MSDF was formed by Mon nationalities and other ethnic groups dedicated to fighting to topple the dictatorship in Burma.

After police and soldiers across the country cracked down on peaceful protesters demonstrating against last year’s coup, some joined armed resistance groups to fight the regime’s armed forces.
